It’s a Bird! It’s a Plane! It’s Supername! The Best and Worst Names in Comic Books

In honor of Comic-Con, which just finished in San Diego, we’ve assembled some of the best, worst, and weirdest superhero and villain names.

Batman v Superman costumesThere are so many evocative and memorable monikers–Batman, Black Widow, General Zod, Mystique, Ozymandias–I could never choose a winner.

Though these are less well known (for obvious reasons), there are dozens of god-awful names too: Paste-Pot Pete, Goat-Faced Girl, The Whizzer, Elongated Man. For most sexist alone (a subcategory of worst), we’ve got a half dozen, including Lady Cop, Thor Girl, She-Hulk, and Jezebel Jet.

For weirdest, I have to say it’s a tie between Arm-Fall-Off-Boy and Matter-Eater Lad. (Google them, I am not making this up.)

If you want to see more, the Weeklings selection by Samuel Sattin of 50 best and worst is quite comprehensive:

And if you’d like to come up with your own epithet of evil, or good, but are short on time (or creativity), these generators will help you out:
